Carburetor vapor lock symptoms11/19/2023 symptoms c with vapor lock, include, choppy idle and stalling when excessively idling or at very low cruise speeds such as traffic jams. the other more common symptom is the fuel is vaporizing in the bowl of the carb from too much heat at the carb base. these pumps MUST be mounted as close to the tank as possible and with a fuel filter in front of them. otherwise, the only electric pumps that are reliable are expensive holley and carter pumps, which also require a regulator, which is an added expense as well. you can simply run insolating hose around the fuel hose and that solves the problem, 9 times out of ten, or simply route the fuel lines better. electric pumps arn't any more reliable, plus they are noisy. people automatically tend to put an electric pump on, and assume that it solves both types of vapor lock and it only solves this form, which isnt the most common form. the mechanical fuel pump is designed to pull fuel, while an electric pump is designed to push, if the fuel isnt liquid around the mechanical pump, then the fuel pump loses its prime. if the lines around the fuel pump between the frame and carb are getting excessively hot, whether the line is laying over the heat riser passages on the intake, or the fan is creating a trajectory of hot air on parts of the line, the fuel in the line can vaporize. with the low boiling points of todays gasoline, we are witnessing vapor lock and heat soak symptoms that these cars didn't necessarily have from the factory with the stock configurations. these symptoms don't occur with fuel injection because those systems are under high pressure. There's essentially two different forms of vapor lock that we see on old carburated cars. When I restart, it is cranky for about two minutes - until new, cooler fuel refills the bowls - then it is fine again. On my car, it runs fine until I shut it off and leave it for 15 minutes or so (long enough to go into a store). I'm pretty sure this is a situation where the boiling is in the fuel bowls. On modern cars with EFI, the pressure can be 100 PSI! Admittedly, on the SU fuel pump, a pretty low pressure. It is less likely for fuel to boil on the outlet side of a pump because it is under pressure. Yes - traditional vapour lock is when the fuel on the *inlet* side of the pump boils, making it impossible for the pump to get fuel. The electric fuel pump located at the tank will see only liquid and have no problem filling the hot float bowl(s). Thinking out loud, it wouldn't be the traditional vapor lock problem associated with a fuel pump located under the hood. What I don't understand is why don't the overflow pipes take care of the higher than acceptable fuel level in the bowls? My solution is to start with the accelerator partly depressed. I have this happen often in the summer, on hot parking lots. This overflow actually floods the motor, thus the fuel smell. If you are smelling rich exhaust after a hard start, I believe that the fuel in the float bowl is expanding and allowing overflow into the carb throat. the pump will still move fuel to the bowls, fill them, and allow the car to start as normal. You have essentially a tank mounted fuel pump, it won't cavitate based on engine heat. When that "bubble" migrated to the pump, the pump would lose prime and cavitate. The line to the pump would develop a vapor bubble due to fuel evaporating in the line. Maybe I don't understand the concept of "vapor lock" but I thought it used to be an issue in cars with an engine driven fuel pump.
